Why Retailers Should Have Online Bargain Sales Print
Features - Feature Articles
Written by segax

How many times have you gone to a sale and discovered that the game you were after has sold out? A thousand times I hear you say. It happened to me a while back when I was in search of Mario Party 8 for the Wii at a Big W sale. I happily entered the store and crossed my fingers that there would still be copies of the game left on the shelves.

Did I find the game? Nope, I always like to ask at the counter to see if they have any more copies out back, but the clerk tells me that the game sold out in a couple of minutes after the doors opened. A huge line was waiting outside and quickly grabbed up all the good games on sale. Which made me wonder how does one that works from 9 until 5 compete with this madness?

What I propose is that the big three: Big W, Kmart and Target hold special online bargain sales after say 7pm, after everyone has come back from a full day's work. It would be a wonderful opportunity for people that have worked all day to compete and score some bargains. Instead of having to visit store to store in search of a game title.

The only problem that I see with an online bargain sale is the amount of traffic that would be generated. I remember when Madman had a huge online sale. Every DVD was only $10 and within minutes the whole site had become extremely slow due to the stress caused by the huge amount of orders being placed. If it weren't the 40+ item shopping carts, I believe the site would have been able to cope. Plus I don't believe any gamer is going to buy up to 40 games at a sale.

Another feature that the big three could incorporate is an item finder. Similar to the one EB has for their preowned games. Instead of running around from store to store the online item finder would quickly be able to point you to the store where you can find the game. You could then call the store up and place it on hold.

I suppose we could all sign a petition of some sort or maybe create a standard letter that we could all send to the big three demanding online bargain sales functionality as well as an item finder.
